Small Schools with Big Spirit Arrive in
Spokane for State B Basketball
Basketball tournament kicks off a huge month of sports in Spokane
(Spokane, WA, February 25, 2013) – Outstanding high school basketball and infectious school spirit never disappoints in the battle for the State 1B & 2B Basketball titles. The WIAA Hardwood Classic State Boys and Girls 1B/2B Basketball Championships takes over Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena Thursday, February 28. The three day tournament brings 32 teams, 480 athletes and coaches and more than 1,500 fans from smallest corners of the state.
Spokane’s hospitality community is preparing for 3,000-3,500 hotel room nights over the three-day tournament. “They may be small schools but they make a big impact when they arrive in Spokane,” says Eric Sawyer, President and CEO of the Spokane Sports Commission. “Players and their families stay in our hotels, fill our restaurants and shop in our stores.” State B will generate more than one million dollars in economic impact.
State B begins a huge month of sports in Spokane. The NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Tournament, USA Volleyball Pacific Northwest Qualifier and USA Boxing National Championships round out March. These three nationally respected sporting events continue to grow Spokane’s positive image as a strong sports community. Sports in March have a combined economic impact of $8 million and help the Spokane Sports Commission recruit new national and international sporting events.
